Roller Derby in Oneonta
The league started began in the fall of 2010 when a group of fun-loving, determined women and men saw an opportunity to bring something new to the community. The founders wanted to create a place where people could challenge themselves, have fun, and make a positive impact on Oneonta.
In keeping with the regions rich railroad history, the league adopted a railroad themed name that reflected local pride. Our original home team the Derailing Darlings, brought power and precision to the track, while our officials known as the Rinkertons, kept the action safe and fair.
The league’s first year focused on learning the sport, developing skating skills, and building the foundation for a sustainable organization. In 2011, the league hosted its first home bout at Interskate 88, drawing more than 500 spectators and demonstrating strong local support for roller derby.
Evolving With the Sport
As the league gained experience, members expanded their knowledge of the sport through travel, competition, and training clinics. League members embraced the growing complexity of modern roller derby, continuously improving their skills and understanding of the game. Through those experiences, they gained a deeper understanding of the sport and the dedication required to succeed.
The 2012-2013 season marked an important period of growth. The league continued to develop both on and off the track, resulting in a successful winning season. The league remained committed to becoming more competitive while maintaining its volunteer-run structure.
During this time the league also adopted the name Hill City Rollers, transitioning from its original identity as the Derailing Darlings. The new name reflected both the league’s roots in Oneonta and its vision for continued growth.
Growing Hill City Rollers
As the league matured, so did the support systems that allowed it to operate successfully. During the 2013-2014 season, Hill City Rollers expanded its officiating program by recruiting and training additional referees and non-skating officials.
As a skater-run league the Hill City Rollers provides opportunities for members to develop leadership skills and work together toward common goals. Through teamwork, dedication and a shared love of roller derby the league continues to build a strong foundation for the future.
Today
Hill City Rollers remains a skater-operated, grassroots league driven by volunteers, officials and supporters who believe in the power of sport to create change. We continue to build a league that reflects the strength and diversity of our community.
Proceeds from our home bouts have supported local charities and organizations through food and blood drives, shelter support, winter coat collections, school programs, and more. We’ve also shown up for the community through festivals, volunteer work, and local events.
From the beginning, giving back has been central to our mission. Supporting Hill City Rollers means supporting the community.
