About Hill City Rollers

Roller Derby in the City of the Hills

Hill City Rollers is a grassroots, skater-operated roller derby league based in Oneonta, New York. We’re a community of skaters, officials, volunteers, and supporters who come together because we love roller derby and everything that grows around it: teamwork, confidence, friendship, competition, and a whole lot of fun.

Our league has been part of the Oneonta community since roller derby returned to the area in 2010. What started with a group of people learning to skate and building a league from the ground up has grown into a lasting local derby community. Our first home game at Interskate 88 in 2011 drew more than 500 spectators, and the league has continued to skate, volunteer, recruit, and represent roller derby in the region ever since.

More Than a Team

Roller derby takes a lot of people to make it happen. Hill City Rollers includes the skaters you see on the track, but we’re also supported by referees, non-skating officials, volunteers, coaches, committee members, and community partners. Our officials are known as the Rinkertons, continuing the railroad theme inspired by Oneonta’s history.

Because we’re skater-operated, our members also help run the league. From training and bout production to marketing, sponsorship, outreach, and officiating, there are plenty of ways to be part of HCR beyond playing in a game.

Rooted in Our Community

Community has been part of Hill City Rollers from the beginning. Over the years, the league has supported local organizations through bout proceeds, food and blood drives, coat collections, community events, parades, and volunteer work. We believe roller derby can bring people together both on and off the track.

We also believe there should be room for new people to discover the sport. You don’t need years of skating experience or a background in athletics to start learning. New skaters build their skills over time, and there are also plenty of non-skating ways to participate if being on the track isn’t your thing.
